Selling on eBay without losing your account
The rules that actually get accounts restricted, in plain English.
The account is the asset, not the listing
A suspended eBay account is not a setback you route around — it's the whole business gone, feedback and search ranking included. eBay measures sellers on a handful of ongoing metrics: on-time dispatch, tracking uploaded, cases opened against you, and how well items match their description. Falling below its bar brings real restrictions — reduced visibility, selling limits, and in serious or repeated cases, suspension.
None of this happens from one bad day. It happens from patterns, which is exactly why it's worth building the pattern correctly from the first listing.
Dispatch on time, every time — with tracking uploaded
Late or untracked dispatch is the fastest route to damage here, because it touches the metric eBay watches most closely, and it's the thing a buyer notices first. Tracking uploaded promptly is your single biggest protection — it proves the item moved, it's usually what shields you if a buyer later claims non-receipt, and it's why it happens automatically the moment an order is placed here, rather than being something you have to remember at the end of a busy day.
Never sell what you can't supply
Selling stock that's already gone is the failure eBay takes most seriously, because the buyer is the one left waiting on something that was never coming. Listings here come down automatically the moment the supplier's stock hits zero, and go back up automatically when it returns — so a seller-cancelled order over stock, one of the more damaging outcomes for your standing, isn't something you have to catch manually.
Represent it honestly — your own words, your own images
An "item not as described" case is expensive in more than one way: eBay usually sides with the buyer, you typically cover return postage, and enough of them drag your account standing down along with everything else. Copied listing text gets reported by whoever you copied it from, and photos hot-linked to someone else's server can vanish or change without warning. Titles are rewritten and images are re-hosted from our own domain here — not a spun rewording for its own sake, but so that what goes up under your listing is actually yours, and nothing in it points back to where it came from.
Where dropshipping and eBay's rules actually meet
eBay doesn't ban dropshipping outright. Its policy targets a specific version of it: buying an item from another live marketplace or retail listing and having that seller ship it directly to your buyer, with their own packaging and paperwork attached. That's the version that gets accounts suspended, because the buyer can end up holding proof they weren't really buying from you. A wholesale supply arrangement where nothing in the box carries anyone else's branding is a different thing — but the underlying principle is the same one to hold onto: whatever arrives at your buyer's door should look, unambiguously, like it came from you.
Answer messages
Response time to buyer messages feeds into the same standing as dispatch and cases. Slow replies cost you quite apart from whether the sale itself goes well, and a buyer who's been ignored is far more likely to open a case than one who got even a short reply. Nothing here automates courtesy — budget a few minutes a day for it. It's the cheapest insurance on this whole list.
| What actually gets accounts restricted | What's handled for you here |
|---|---|
| Late or untracked dispatch | Tracking uploaded automatically at order time |
| Selling stock that's already gone | Listings auto-paused the moment stock hits zero |
| Item-not-as-described cases | Your own rewritten titles, your own re-hosted images |
| A parcel that reveals another retailer shipped it | Blind fulfilment — no supplier trace in the box |
| Slow replies to buyer messages | Nothing automatic — this one is still yours |
